New Delhi : Aptitude, cultural fit, ability to adapt are some of the traits that India’s largest car manufacturer looks at while hiring candidates during campus interviews.

“We do like candidates who are strong in their principles so that we don’t have to compromise the company standards while accomplishing the given tasks,” C.S. Raju, executive director (HR), Maruti Suzuki India Ltd, said in an email interview. Edited excerpts:

What do you look for in a candidate when you hire from a campus?

There are few key points based on which we evaluate the candidates.

a) Aptitude: Logical thinking and Problem solving skill are few of the important competencies based on which we evaluate the candidates on campus.

b) Fundamental basic knowledge: Our panel members probe the candidates on fundamental concepts which the candidate would have studied during their course curriculum. If a candidate is good at fundamentals, he or she will definitely be able to grasp and learn new things.

c) Culture fit: Since we are a Japanese company, discipline is one of key ingredient of our Maruti culture. A person who shows a high level of integrity and discipline towards his life has an edge over other candidates.

What do you like in a candidate whom you see on campus?

The key factor which we take into account is the candidate’s capability of quick learning. If the candidate is capable to learn things faster, it’s easier for the company to groom the candidates to take ownership for challenging work and responsibilities.

What you would like to change in the B-school curricula?

We believe there should be more emphasis on the practical knowledge. There is need to have minimum six months of mandatory industry training as a part of their curriculum.

What the most important factor for success?

Success for us is not how high you rise in your life however it is how high you bounce back when you hit bottom.

The most important factor for success is ability to have a driving force. You need to be motivated and determined enough to achieve your goal
