OnePlus users can now benefit from a new firmware update – albeit a maintenance one – which brings a deeply integrated Cortana OnePlus One users’ way.
The firmware update has the build version 12.1-YOG7DAS2K1. The maintenance update comes a little over a month after the update with the build YOG4PAS3JL made its way to OnePlus One users.
The current update weighs 68.8MB and for the unfamiliar, Cyanogen OS 12.1 is based on Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. According to the released notes, the update brings security updates that are critical for OnePlus One users. It also brings several bug fixes. The update is an OTA one and was pushed out on Monday, Jan. 4.
The update is only available for OnePlus One smartphones that are on Cyanogen OS 12.1.
“The maintenance release provides big fixes and critical security updates for your device as well as adds deeply integrated features for Cortana including voice activation and ability to toggle different settings,” reveals the changelog.
While OnePlus is yet to officially confirm the maintenance update’s rollout, users on the OnePlus One forum have confirmed its availability.
In Dec. 2015, Microsoft officially launched Cortana – its intelligent voice assistant – for iOS and Android. Prior to the official December release for both Android and iOS, Cortana made its way as a public beta for Android back in August 2015.
The Redmond-based company also teamed up with Cyanogen to bring a better integration of Cortana to Cyanogen OS. Thanks to this deeper integration, Cortana will now have the ability to switch on the Quiet Mode on your OnePlus One handset.
Cortana will also have the capability to toggle network modes, switch off the OnePlus One handset and more. Users will also be able to deploy the “Hey Cortana” feature.
How To Install The Update For OnePlus One
Since the update is an OTA one, it may take time to make its way to all OnePlus One users. However, if you’re unable to wait patiently for the firmware update to hit your devices, we have a step-by-step guide to help you download it manually. Here’s the deal:
Important
– Ensure your OnePlus One smartphone has over 50 percent battery charge
– Back-up important data before downloading the update
– Ensure you have sufficient free memory as the update weighs nearly 70MB
– If you are running custom recovery, then wait as the full package is not available yet
Step-by-step Installation Guide
Step 1: Download the YOG7DAS2K1 file from this link or this link.
Step 2: Save it on the smartphone’s storage.
Step 3: Switch off the handset and reboot it in the recovery mode. This can be done by holding the volume and power buttons down together till the smartphone responds.
Step 4: Once you are greeted by the Recovery screen – a matter of seconds – you will see a list of options. Select “APPLY UPDATE” from the list.
Step 5: Next select the “Choose from internal storage” option.
Step 6: Select the storage device. This should be zero.
Step 7: Locate the downloaded YOG7DAS2K1 file you saved to the smartphone. The downloaded file should be saved in the “Download Folder” if Chrome automatically downloaded it. If you saved it to an alternate location, retrieve the file from there.
Step 8: Once the file is located, select it. Next up, click on YES to begin the installation.
Step 9: Once the installation has finished click on Restart.
Step 10: Once the OnePlus One handset reboots, it should be running the current Cyanogen OS 12.1 firmware.
You can now explore the features the update brings, including the deeper integrated Cortana. Thanks to this integration, users will hopefully get used to Cortana on Android.
If you don’t like Cortana despite the improvements and prefer Google Now, don not worry – you have the option of uninstalling it as it is a standalone app.
