Uber launched its first desktop application, a universal Windows app that lets Windows 10 users request a car-on-demand anytime using their PCs.
Uber disclosed that the Universal Windows Platform (UWP) makes it possible to deploy a single app which works perfectly across smartphones, tablets and PCs.
Cortana Voice Commands
This new app brings in new functionalities to make it easier for the user to request a ride. Users can now simply ask Cortana to get an Uber to anywhere they wish to go.
Live Tile
This feature will let users check out the estimated time it will take for the Uber to get to their place, without opening the Uber app. All they need to do is to pin the Uber app to the computer’s Start menu.
Free Ride
Uber is throwing in more perks to sweeten the pot. New users of the Windows app in the U.S. can now take advantage of a free ride up to $20. Before the ride, users only need to key in “MSFTWIN10” under the “PROMOTIONS” tab within the app to redeem the offer.
Users can grab the Uber app for Windows 10 via the Windows Store, free of charge.
Users, however, should need to run the latest Windows 10 November Update, or the 10586.29 version, to successfully download the application onto their Windows 10 PCs.
“Building out the Windows 10 Uber app has been very exciting for our team,”says Uber. “We worked to upgrade the Windows 8 app to support the best of Windows 10 while also imagining the tablet and PC experiences, so that users could initiate rides from all devices.”
Microsoft makes it clear that the desktop app works like its apps on other platforms. There is no need to sign up by means of the Windows 10 Mobile app. They can directly sign up for an account with the use of the desktop app by simply putting in a phone number. A code will then be sent to your phone number which you can enter into the desktop app later on.
