To celebrate the release of Cars 3 in theaters, Disney added Cars 3-themed content updates to several mobile applications and games.
With this release, six different apps have been updated with Cars 3 content: Club Penguin Island, Disney Emoji Blitz, Disney Crossy Road, Disney Story Central, Disney Jigsaw Puzzles! and Color by Disney. Some of this themed content is freely available, while other content must be purchased.
This isn’t the first time Disney has used its mobile games and apps to advertise new films. Past content updates coincided with the debuts of Avengers: Age of Ultron, Moana and more.
These updates help raise awareness of films among existing app users, and they can also drive increased revenue and downloads to the associated apps. For instance, following the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens in theaters, app store optimization company Sensor Tower found that iOS Star Wars games and apps experienced increased downloads and revenue.
Alongside these content updates, Disney also released two new Cars 3-themed apps: Pixar Stickers: Cars 3 (pictured) and Cars 3: Lightning League. Pixar Stickers: Cars 3 costs $1.99, and it allows iOS users to send Cars 3 stickers to their friends in iMessage. Cars 3: Lightning League, meanwhile, is a free-to-play mobile racing game on iOS and Android.
Disney previously capitalized on the Cars 3 buzz by presenting a live interactive virtual reality experience on Twitter and Periscope called the Papercraft Derby.
