President Trump reiterated his commitment to social media Tuesday and said it is the “only way for me to get the truth out.”
“Only the Fake News Media and Trump enemies want me to stop using Social Media (110 million people). Only way for me to get the truth out!” Trump tweeted.
The president frequently takes to his Twitter account to denounce the investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election and recently criticized Senate Republicans for failing to pass a healthcare bill.
Some have speculated that the ascension of former Marine Gen. John Kelly to the role of chief of staff may force Trump to tone down his social media usage. That has not been the case so far as Trump unleashed a long string of tweets Saturday morning and a few more on Sunday.
Trump often touts his use of social media as a way to get an unfiltered message out to his supporters without needing to rely on the press, and said last month his use of Twitter was “modern day presidential.”
But Republicans and Democrats, disagree, and have criticized the president’s use of Twitter.
After the president sent a series of tweets in June insulting “Morning Joe” host Mika Brzezinski, several Republicans pleaded with the president to stop launching personal attacks.
“Please just stop,” Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Neb., wrote on his Twitter account. “This isn’t normal and it’s beneath the dignity of your office.”
Polling suggests that voters, too, disagree with the president’s use of Twitter.
A June Fox News poll found 71 percent of voters believe Trump’s tweets hurt his agenda, compared to 17 percent who believe his tweets are helpful.
