Nokia 6, Nokia 8 and Other Nokia Android Phones Will Get Android P Update: HMD Global

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The company is open to the idea of unlocking bootloaders
  • HMD Global recently shared the release timeline for Android Oreo updates
  • Unlocking of bootloaders will happen one at a time

Nokia 6, Nokia 8 as well as the budget Nokia 3 and Nokia 5 will get the Android P update when the next major build of the mobile OS is released, HMD Global has confirmed. The Finnish company has made the statement soon after it announced that the smartphones will be upgraded to Android 8.0 Oreo before the end of the year. This is line with the company’s promises at launch that its Nokia Android smartphones will run stock Android with frequent updates. It means that all current Nokia Android smartphones will be provided with two major OS upgrades – Android Oreo and Android P.

This kind of support for non-Nexus and non-Pixel smartphones seems to be an impressive feat and especially so for Nokia 3, which is the cheapest model out of the three and falls in the budget segment category.

As if this was not enough, HMD Global’s Chief Technology Officer has also revealed that the company is now open to the idea of unlocking the bootloaders of its Nokia-branded phones. The news comes after the company initially said it wouldn’t unlock the bootloaders. The decision effectively means that even after the company ends its official support for the smartphones, you will be able to keep your handset up-to-date with custom ROM builds. In his tweet, however, Mikko Jaakkola said, “We would unlock one model at the time. What device would you unlock first?”

This means that it might take some time for the company to unlock the bootloaders and will happen for devices one at a time. As of now, HMD Global seems to be heading in the right direction and if this trend continues, we can expect Nokia to develop a loyal user base once again.
