Griffin BreakSafe

Oh, this is smart. Griffin’s taken the initiative to bring the trusty old MagSafe back to the latest generation of MacBooks, which dropped the safety technology in favor of the soon-to-be ubiquitous USB-C standard.

The accessory maker’s BreakSafe delivers the best of both worlds, with a two-piece brushed metal adapter that snaps together magnetically, and, like the MagSafe magnetically-attached power connectors, breaks apart when yanked, so tripping over the thing doesn’t send you — or your computer — sailing.

The plug works like a charm, and looks pretty nice, as far as computer plugs go, matching the metal and black aesthetic that has long colored the MacBook line. There’s a charging light on the plug, to let you know how close the battery is to full, and, like both the MagSafe and USB-C, the plug is reversible.

The BreakSafe Magnetic USB-C Power Cable runs a reasonable $40. It’s currently listed on Griffin’s site as “coming soon.”
